Makeup: General Tips - Lips
Lip Liner
[Source: Cosmopolitan] Though a few tarty types (hello, Lil' Kim!) still sport the dark-outline thing, it's a dated look. The best mouth-defining approach: Match your lip pencil to your lipstick. "You'll make your lips look fuller and give them a cleaner shape," says New York City celebrity makeup artist Vincent Longo. Start by lining and filling in your mouth with a lip pencil. "This step creates an intense laying down of color and makes whatever you apply next last longer," Longo says. Finish with a matching lipstick, stain or gloss. The one exception to this rule: Use a flesh-toned pencil under any color of lipstick or gloss. If you don't think you have a steady enough hand to use a dark color or don't want to make your lipstick look deeper in hue, they're more forgiving and do just as good a job.
Summer Gloss
Many people wonders if wearing SPF-free gloss in the sunlight increases the potential of burning lips since the gloss is so shiny.. Here's what experts say:
Believe it or not, going solo with gloss can indeed increase your chances of lip burn on sunny days. But it's not because of the shine factor, says San Francisco dermatologist Richard Glogau. Gloss gives your lips a heavy-duty shot of moisture in addition to a sexy sheen. Although that moisture will prevent your lips from chapping or peeling, it also actually acts as a superconductor of damaging UV rays, allowing them to penetrate the skin more quickly.
To protect your pucker in the sun, stay away from clear gloss. Pick one with a bit of color instead, since the pigment is a natural sunblock. You could also first line and fill in your lips with a nude pencil for the same protective-pigment effect. Or prep your lips with a slick of lip balm containing SPF 15 or higher.
Scarlet-Frock Solution
Thought only red lipstick goes with your red dress? .. The best lip color to pair with crimson clothes is a neutral, earthy color like nude, says celebrity makeup artist Jennifer Farhood. We like MAC Spite, $13, or Estée Lauder Pure Color Long Lasting Lipstick in Beige, $22. Since red is a bold, look-at-me hue, sporting it on your lips and your bod may be a bit much. But if you're hell-bent on having a cherry-hued mouth, go for a gloss that has just a hint of ruby so you can match your ensemble without going overboard. Try Lancôme Juicy Tubes in Cerise, $14.50.
Pretty In Pink
Which pink lipstick looks good on you? .. To get the scoop on pink-pout protocol, we consulted Julie Hewett, owner of Julie Hewett Noir Lipsticks and makeup artist for celebs like Nicole Kidman. "The darker your skin tone, the more pigment you can wear," she says. If you're going the drugstore route: Light-skinned women should opt for a sheer hue without any blue cast to it, like mauve or pale rose. We like Cover Girl Triple Lipstick in Tutu, $5.25, and Maybelline Wet Shine Lip Color in Mauvelous, $6.50. Olive-skinned and African-American lovelies look great in darker pinks with a touch of purple. Try L'Oreal Shine Delice in Black Cherry, $7.49. Still at a loss? Go to your favorite makeup counter for a free consultation. For a look that's gorgeous on any kind of cutie, use a beigy pink gloss. Try Julie Hewett Nude Noir, $18, and Clarins Lip Colour Glaze, $16.50.
Chosing The Colour
According to expert Leonard Engelman the trick is to "Observe yourself but remember color is an accessory. What color is your wardrobe and what color are you currently wearing? Select three colors in the same range- light, medium and dark. Try on each color and pick the one you feel most comfortable wearing."
Oops!...I Applied Red Lipstick Beyond My Lip Line
It's certainly a pain when you apply red lipstick beyond the lip line and it stains. Here's the repair strategy! The easiest way to remove a dark-hued lipstick smudge is with oil-free eye-makeup remover. "The stain should lift off immediately, without any extra rubbing or skin redness," explains NYC makeup artist Laura Geller. And since the formula is oil-free, it won't make the rest of your lipstick blur. To do, dab a little remover on a cotton swab, then carefully run the tip along your lip line -- as if you're using a pencil eraser. Another option is to cover the smear with a skin-tone-matching foundation or concealer. First, blot off as much of the stain as possible with a tissue, then dab the corner of a damp cosmetic sponge into the cover-up and rub it lightly over the area to neutralize the redness.
No More Clown Mouth!
Few makeup mishaps look worse than a pucker with fake dark edges and a pale center. The number one rule for avoiding it: After lining your lips, fill them in with the same liner, says B.J. Gillian, makeup artist to such sexy celebs as Mira Sorvino and Niki Taylor. Since lipstick and gloss wear off faster than liner, if you rim only the outside of your mouth, you'll be left with an obvious ring when your lip hue fades. But by filling in the whole area with liner, your mouth will still look monotone when your lipstick is gone. Another lip tip: Stick to either nude shades or hues that match your lipstick or gloss exactly. One nude we like: Cover Girl CG Smoothers LipLiner in Spices, $5.25.
General Looks
Leonard Engelman's general lipstick application suggestions are the following: "For a natural lip look - cover the entire lip area with a pencil close to your lips natural shade. For intensified color - apply pencil over the entire lip area followed by a coordinating lipstick. For fuller lips - outline lips slightly outside the lip line and fill in with lipstick. In most cases you will want a pencil slightly darker than the lipstick. (Remember the lips have more color then the surrounding skin. Therefore the darker pencil is necessary to compensate). To correct uneven lips - Simply even the lips with the lip pencil and fill with lipstick. To minimize lipstick bleeding - Outline the lips with a broad line using a lip pencil. Powder the pencil line. Fill in the lips with lipstick, but carry the lipstick just up to the lip pencil. This helps set a barrier for the more emollient lipstick."
